Dear LMS Parents and Guardians,

Lebanon Middle School students will be participating in the state administered Smarter Balanced Assessments in Mathematics and English Language Arts/Literacy beginning May 1, 2017. New Hampshire RSA 193-C:6 requires that all districts administer the statewide assessment to all students in the designated grades (3-8 and one grade in high school). Formerly, the New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP) fulfilled this requirement.  NECAP Science will still be given to eighth graders.  The Smarter Balanced Assessments are intended to provide an academic checkup by measuring real-world skills like critical thinking and problem solving along with a students’ proficiency of the grade level standards. This assessment differs from previous statewide assessments in many ways: The assessment is web-based, untimed and adaptive. Based on student responses, the question difficulty is adjusted throughout the assessment. Students needing designated supports and accommodations will have these embedded into their testing experience. More information about the assessment is available in the chart on the back of this letter and on the New Hampshire Smarter Balanced Portal at http://nh.portal.airast.org/.

All students will be tested according to the schedule that follows.  Please try to schedule appointments or other activities for times other than your child’s scheduled testing time.

May 1-5

Grades 5 and 6 SBAC

May 8-12

Grades 7 and 8 SBAC

May 15-19**

Grade 8 NECAP Science

**NECAP Science will be scheduled over two days during this week

Testing sessions will run throughout the day.  It is imperative that the students be on time for school, particularly during their testing week.,  It is also important for students to have a good night’s sleep and a nutritious breakfast before beginning the day’s testing session.  During test days, the schedule will be modified and periods may not occur in numerical order or not at all.  Band, Chorus, and lessons may be held at different times of the day.

If you have any questions about the SBAC testing schedule or the assessments themselves, please contact me.

Sincerely,

Martha Langill                                                                        Synthia Liska

Principal                                                                                  Test Administrator
